Lapalux is getting set to release his Lustmore LP on April 6/7th via Brainfeeder, and the UK producer’s second single off the upcoming record, “Don’t Mean A Thing“, recently premiered on Flying Lotus‘ BBC Radio 1 Residency show. Stuart Howard explains that the new record is inspired by the experience of hypnogogia, that state of consciousness between waking and sleep, while adding, “Whenever I think about the album I think about the bar scene in The Shining. There’s something about that strange, hallucinatory psychological madness that relates to the music…”. Indeed, there’s a visual quality to the musician’s newest sonic efforts, and, as Howard adds, “You can almost see these imaginary movies play in your head when you listen. That’s something that I really started to work into my music – the idea of creating imagery and characters, storyline, and emotion.”
“Don’t Mean A Thing” sets about on a syrupy, slightly faded gait while a hushed sense of melody shimmers in a misty rain, waiting to kick in with a swell of emotion when the track’s retro sounding vocal line drops. Like much of what Lapalux does so well, the vocals carry the kind of familiarity that takes you back in time, hunting through the memory banks, while still sounding perfectly Now. By midpoint, the cut’s cinematic scope opens up even more when a pitch-wheelin’ synth-line leads into what sounds like honey sweet slide guitar–as the night’s activities head towards romantic pursuits.
