Holly Herndon is getting set to release her 2xLP Platform on May 19th via RVNG Intl./4AD. Today we check out the video for “Interference“, directed by the Dutch design studio Metahaven–who also directed the musician’s video for “Home” this past September. Attempting to bring into vision new avenues by which “pop” music might disrupt our currently cynical cultural trends, Herndon continues her experimental sonic approach, while “Interference” shows her facility for making this music somatic and approachable.
Metahaven follows suit with an intriguing video offering that composites a gray, sometimes tattered flag, over various imagery and text. Often we see hands, sometimes solo, but also joined in such away as to suggest a teamed, communal effort. In addition, we see the board and pieces from a complex war game developed by the French social theorist Guy Debord, whose notion of the Spectacle animated the Situationist International, eventually influencing France’s student protests in the late 60’s.
