London producer Desert Sound Colony returns to the Scissor & Thread label with his Cracks In My Soul EP, due out April 27th. The exquisite “Riverbed” closes out the new effort, and on it the musician seamlessly blends several eras of UK music into a cut that has both throwback and future forward qualities. Initially riding a 60’s sounding psychedelic vibe, with reverb laced guitar and ethereal, swirling vocals, “Riverbed” sounds a bit like Nick Drake sitting in on a session with Spacemen 3–which is worth the price of admission all on it’s own. As the track title implies, there’s a pastoral feel here, and it’s echoed in lyrics like “…I believe I can see/dappled sunlight thru the trees/from my knees”; but when “Riverbed” jumps “forward” to drop a 90’s era trip-hop beat, a pretty amazing compression of UK musical history happens. It’s as though a worm-hole opens, and thru it you can see all the way from the Fairport Convention to Massive Attack. Pretty nifty!
