No Joy‘s upcoming LP More Faithful comes out June 9th on Mexican Summer. Like on their 2013 LP Wait To Pleasure, the band has chosen to work with the musician/producer Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pinks Haunted Graffiti, Chairlift, Lansing- Dreiden, Violens). While some of the tracking for the record was done at Gary’s Electric in Brooklyn, it seems a good portion of the work was accomplished at a makeshift studio set up in an old farmhouse in Costa Rica. This seems to lend a cut like “Moon In My Mouth” a somewhat warmer disposition than the more glowering lean of Wait To Pleasure. Exquisitely layered vocals and a tropically breezy melody shine thru this track, as guitarists Jasamine White-Gluz and Laura Lloyd amicably lock hands in a four-note melody, while the rhythm section of drummer Garland Hastings and bassist Michael Farsky unwind an odd 11/4 time signature that skips a beat thru each verse. Call it math gaze.
