Doldrums‘ LP The Air Conditioned Nightmare came out yesterday on Sub Pop, and today we have this new video for the track “Loops“. Directed by the filmmaker and artist Lily X, and produced by Raw Tings’ Tony Lowe, the visuals have a real vintage, underground film feel, conjuring up the glory days of Jack Smith‘s Flaming Creatures, or Kenneth Anger‘s Scorpio Rising.
Haunted by an alluring succubus, our moony and pajama-ed protagonist seems to writhe in spasms of agony and desire here, as this dream vixen works her heavy-lidded spell. Like the aforementioned films, “Loops” makes excellent use of homemade sets and costuming to create a surreal boudoir sequence, which Lily X intercuts with her own animations and day-glo colored sensibilities. Though, as we reach the video’s finale, someone’s love for slow dripping, viscous liquids happens to appear, reminding me of a certain NSFW video by Phèdre, for their track “In Decay“…from a few years back. Doldrums’ Airick Woodhead is included in the credits for “concept & stylization” on that video, and it definitely involved some stomach churning uses of thick and clear liquids, as well as erotically placed fish heads. What, you don’t remember that one?
