Fingers released their Little Waves EP this week, and today we check back in with the Ohio trio via the effort’s lead track, “She Said“. The band entered our radar this past March when we posted their debut single “So It Seems“, a cut which featured “crafted arrangements” and “subtle dynamic shifts”, as well as singer Yashi Bellomy‘s “soulful vocal delivery”. “She Said” continues to impress musically, as well as from a production standpoint, while delivering the kind of emotional and sonic urgency that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Bellomy delivers plain spoken lines with bristling intensity here, while the cut’s complex polyrhythms simmer around patiently assertive piano and organ lines that build into crescendos of driving melody. At the midpoint, “She Said” breaks down into a simple piano refrain, and if it sounds a bit too familiar, that’s because it’s supposed to, as the band lulls you into a sucker punch of syncopated rhythm and soaring, organ driven orchestration. This is Fingers at their best, emotionally intense and forthright, while bravely making indie rock-based genres their own thru an inventive and accomplished musicality.
