Chicago’s freak rockers onYou deliver two tracks of pyrotechnic psych on their Captcha Records mini-LP I’m On Fire, just out this week via the label. Led by guitarist/vocalist Stan Wood, also responsible for recording and producing the new effort, onYou combine an uncompromising and fiery sound with excellent musicianship, delivering a powerful, punk-leaning take on the psych genre. Who better, then, to cover the brain splintered drone lunacy of Charles Manson’s “I’m On Fire“, with the band displaying an ability to “lucidly” transcribe this fried-out madness much more ably than the King of Helter Skelter himself!
“Singapore Solution” follows, and like it’s predecessor, it clocks in at over ten minutes. Using the long form jam to traverse wide circles–even when seeming to lose the plot, as this track does when it tangents off on a madcap sonic adventure right into the middle of some other movie–the band always returns to revolve around a strongly rhythmic center. Jarring in the best of ways, I love how this cut jumps the tracks to follow tire squeals into a bad dream complete with maniacal drumming, noir ambiance, and a horror movie ending.
