Listen: Protovulcan “Making Eyes”

987

What happens when the synth punks start playing acid rock? Protovulcan! Chicago keys wizard Will MacLean (Variety Lights, Ice Cream Mission to Mars, Blue Moth) joins forces with drummer extraordinaire Deric Criss (Aleks and the Drummer, Walking Bicycles, Charlie Deets) on this killer new project. You can get a taste of what the fella’s got cookin’ up with this freaky fried jam, “Making Eyes“–which the pair has also made available for download! Recorded live by Andrew Slater at Frogg Mountain Studio, this track moves between intricate, syncopated patterns of drum and organ, before giving way to pyrotechnic passages of strychnine freakout. And while that might sound like a guitar catching fire on the cut, it’s actually MacLean’s Wurlitzer fed thru a smattering of guitar effects. Looks like he’s also brought his Moog to the party, and he uses it to unleash growling bass blasts, while Criss computes Trig-level rhythmic equations–before hammering the skins with lightning abandon!
Protovulcan is currently putting the final touches on their debut LP Stakes Is Low, though a release date is yet to be announced. Meanwhile, you can catch the duo live tomorrow night in Chicago for a FREE gig at Cole’s Bar with the Velcro Lewis Group and Crushed Out.
