Welcome to the future of media…Today Squarepusher provides this “fully immersive” virtual reality experience via his new video for “Stor Eiglass” off the musician’s 2015 LP Damogen Furies out now on Warp Records. The result of a collaborative effort between the design house Marshmallow Laser Feast, the animation team Blue Zoo, and illustrator Rob Pybus, “Stor Eiglass” offers a whimsical and surreal tour of our techno pagan future. MLF’s creative director Robin McNicholas, tasked with developing the idea behind the video, explains:
“We mimicked the track’s theme of twisting a genre to become the antidote of everything it stands for by using VR to frivolously highlight the possible perils of VR addiction. It was just an honest response to how the track appears to start as a super club anthem before subverting everything in the way Squarepusher does so well.”
Using illustrations from the London-based artist Rob Pybus, Blue Zoo combined these 2-D images with animated 3-D worlds inspired by Pybus’ teaming and singular imagination. This material was then coded into a VR app to provide an immersive, 360 degree alternate reality. Blue Zoo’s co-founder Tom Box adds:
“Recent leaps in VR technology mean for the first time we can now develop experiences which are instantly accessible by a mass audience. Developing a fully immersive world that mixes-up Squarepusher’s music, MLF’s creativity, and Rob’s crazy illustrations was the perfect project to use these exciting emerging platforms.”
The easiest way to view the video is via YouTube‘s new 360-degree video platform, using the Chrome browser for best results. Just plug in this URL…(https://youtu.be/6Olt-ZtV_CE). However, “Stor Eiglass” can also be watched using Samsung’s Gear VR, or Google’s DIY VR headset Cardboard— which allows you to build a VR headset using your cellphone and glasses made out of…cardboard! In addition, the video will be screened with headsets at these live events:
