Listen: Raw Meat “Stand By Girl”

Lance Barresi‘s Permanent Records will partner with Daniel Hall‘s RidingEasy Records to release Brown Acid: The First Trip this coming August 11th. Collecting rarely heard acid rock tracks from the 60’s and 70’s, Barresi and Hall have taken great care to make sure these cuts have been properly licensed–rather than just bootlegged–which required numerous hours of leg work tracking down labels and artists who have long since disappeared. Raw Meat‘s “Stand By Girl” provides our first listen in on the compilation. An obscure, lost trio from outside Milwaukee, WI, our only information about the band seems to come from Richard Paul Thomas, a label owner and producer of the track. Scanning deep into his memory banks, he recounts:

“They were one of the tightest trios around at the time, and had a fairly large repertoire of their own material. The only thing that sticks in my mind was the band’s bumper sticker: ‘Raw Meat Is Good For You’. Our offices were on Lincoln Avenue just next door to the Federal Meat inspectors offices.”

“Stand By Girl” stomps in on a super charged groove with plenty of growling low end to back it up. Complete with pyrotechnic guitar work and stellar drumming, this heaviness sure weirds out when the operatic style vocals enter the scene, not to mention a leaden chorus of “la-la-la”‘s. Definite nods to Iron Butterfly here, with some Captain Beefheart tongue-in-cheek thrown in for good measure! In anticipation of Brown Acid: The First Trip, look for Raw Meat’s “Stand By Girl” to come out on 7″ this coming July 14th, with their track “Out In The Country” on the backside.
