Baltimore musician Matt Papich returns this year with his electronic project Co La, and he will release his No No LP via Software on October 9th. Described as an attempt to recontextualize the “club experience”, Papich injects humor and intellect into his sonic creations, upsetting what might be the Club’s escapist agenda for an experience that requires a more plugged in listening. “Suffering (Tuesday)” reflects the artist’s interest in “the never ending psycho-drama that is the American news cycle”, and it uses a peripatetic style akin to musique concrčte to provide the listener with a barrage of disparate auditory information. Disorienting drift ensues as vocal samples collide with off-kilter drum fire, while car horns and sirens vie for space with random snatches of unrooted media.
Milton Melvin Croissant III provides the awesome visuals here, using Bobby Houlihan‘s graphically oriented artwork to create a mesmerizing and revolving tableau. Central to the image is a mirror, and in it Milton reflects a surreal variety of objects–the empty bric-a-brac of consumer culture. Cigarettes and a blow torch, anyone?
