Richard D. James revived his AFX moniker this year releasing the Orphaned Deejay Selek (2006-2008) EP on August 21st via Warp Records. Back in July we listened to the lead single, “serge fenix Rendered 2,” and it was the first AFX output since James ran his Analord series (2003-2005) on Rephlex–the label he founded with Grant Wilson-Claridge in 1991.
Today, the musician made the EP’s bonus track “umil 25-01” available for streaming. As a project, AFX has often been the vehicle by which James explores his love of Chicago acid house, and on this track that trademark sound comes bubbling through after an initial metallic ambiance. The cut’s phasing bass line then meets crisp shuffling beats, as nimble footed rhythms propel the track at high speed. James’ foggy synth lines have that Aphex Twin signature, and while acid is often known for it’s trance inducing repetition, on “umil 25-01” the musician expertly covers several story lines as he spins out his noir tale.
