Listen: Laurel Halo ‘In Situ’ Playlist

492

Laurel Halo deconstructs techno on the tracks “Situation” and “Nebenwirkungen“, off her new Honest Jon‘s release, In Situ. What remains are spectral elements of the genre haunting sonically charged spaces of impeccable fidelity. “Situation” features whistling resonances as rusty cords filter across faulty channels, before a formidable blast of sub-bass gives way to a circling kick drum. Throughout both offerings on the playlist, techno’s trance inducing 4/4 rhythms are subverted, and here they seem to randomly swing around deeper, hand punched bass tones. Halo keeps the cut dub-leaning with a focus on acoustic space and low-end, giving “Situation” an anxious, urban swelter. “Nebenwirkungen” also follows a minimalist approach. In it’s humid night air, a city seems to churn in the near distance, and after this initial ambient stretch, an itchy kick drum meets a recalcitrant back beat. Later, more drum elements from techno’s retinue surface and dive out of earshot, as malfunctioning cords and note patterns knock about with an ominous charge.
