You wouldn’t want to trust Cyndi Lauper‘s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” in the hands of just any pop chanteuse, as you’d probably be risking pretty saccharin results. Leave it, then, to the Chromatics, and their mysterious vocalist Ruth Radelet, to perform the job with aplomb. Let’s face it, Lauper’s wild child was still having fun in the shadows of the Cold War, and the Chromatics echo this with a melancholy and minimal reading of the track–complete with vintage sounding synth-pop instrumentation. While Lauper’s girls mighta’ wandered the Lower East side in search of good times back in the day, Radalet’s more haunted delivery conjures up someone more like David Lynch’s ill-fated thrill seeker, Laura Palmer. The visuals for “Girls Just Wanna Have Some” are provided by Italians Do It Better, and feature Radelet wandering the Santa Monica Pier in dreamy day-glo vision. Also included here, the solarized pleasures of “Girls Just Wanna Have Dub“. Look for these cuts on the Chromatics’ new maxi-single–featuring 7 different versions of these tracks–out today via Italians Do It Better.
