There’s a creep in the cellar, and wouldn’t you know it, it’s Jesus Lizard’s David Yow starring as The Mystery Man in Wrekmeister Harmonies‘ new video for “Night of Your Ascension“. Plenty of Lynchian creepiness abounds here, as Yow dines across from the Red Queen, feasting on pig’s head and wine while a mummy-like creature comes out of the dirt in the basement. The title track to Wrekmeister Harmonies new LP out now on Thrill Jockey, [contextly_sidebar id=”Q5gE9yVcAF3iLdKr2PRYPcreeeN3KgtZ”]”Night of Your Ascension” is based on Don Carlo Gesualdo‘s murder of his wife and her lover. The 17th century Italian prince was also known for his complex musical creations, which Wreckmeister Harmonies’ J.R. Robinson makes use of in this dense and suffocating composition. Constructed around Gesualdo’s “Ahi Dispietata e Cruda” madrigal, Robinson reconfigured it’s microtonal qualities into the key of A, and he includes a haunting vocal performance from Marissa Nadler, nesting it deep in the arrangement to complete this cut’s thanatonic spell.
