The release of John Carpenter‘s Lost Themes LP last year on Sacred Bones was so well received that The Horror Master has been compelled to take the show on the road for a series of live performances. In addition, Carpenter has reunited the Lost Themes crew, his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, for an expansion on their previous effort–the Lost Themes II (Sacred Bones) LP due out April 15th. A family affair, the younger Carpenter and Davies are also both accomplished musicians themselves, and they have composed music for Showtime‘s Masters of Horror series and the motion picture Condemned, respectively.
While Lost Themes was created with the trio living in separate cities, their newest effort was written and recorded with the musicians living in the same locale–allowing for an even richer expansion of musical ideas between the three. This can definitely be heard on the album’s first single, “Distant Dream”–a multi-tiered sonic adventure thru Prog and Kraut tied together by John Carpenter’s analog synth work. Driven by a motorik beat and arpeggiating bass, “Distant Dream” is ultimately a white knuckle ride full of twists; and while each turn reveals some new layer of tension, the listener can only hope they’re being jettisoned towards some Ultimate Release.
