Listen: Xiu Xiu “Into The Night”

Today Xiu Xiu released a cover of Julee Cruise‘s track “Into the Night“, the second single from his upcoming LP Plays The Music of Twin Peaks due out on Record Store Day (April 16th) via Polyvinyl Records. Commissioned by Australia’s Gallery of Modern Art to reinterpret the music from the famed TV series for their David Lynch: Between Two Worlds exhibit, and following the success of that project, Xiu Xiu recorded the tracks with longtime colleagues Jherek Bischoff and Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier providing production and mixing, respectively. Cruise’s tracks like “Falling” and “Into The Night”, the first two singles from Plays The Music of Twin Peaks, have become so iconic. Not to mention the difficulty of approaching their nearly timeless evocation of youthful innocence, but Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart knows to reinterpret these classics his way–rather than to offer faithful reproductions. Besides that, the musician’s singular aesthetic vision has always been weird and otherly enough to make him the perfect candidate for a project like this. “Into The Night” bristles with a sonic bombast not heard on Cruise’s sublime original, while Stewart’s haunted vocals move between registers inhabiting the upper and lower levels of his range while harmonizing across verses.
Xiu Xiu is currently touring Europe playing the music from the album, and the band will play The Kitchen in NYC on April 30th, as well as the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in San Francisco on June 4th. Here is a list of the upcoming dates
