Manchester-based producer Andy Stott will release his fourth LP Too Many Voices on April 22nd via Modern Love. This week the musician introduced us to the next installment from the upcoming offering with this formidable new track “Selfish“. Striking an initially off-putting demeanor thru sparse percussive hits, this cut’s taciturn opening belies an aggressive and violent nature ready to pounce at a hair trigger’s notice. Like Texas-based producer Rabit, “Selfish” displays an aural love of gun-like drum hits here, sometimes squeezing off multiple rounds with an assassin’s malice. But If Rabit warns us of a hitman like Schwarzenegger’s cyborg Terminator on a track like “Pandemic“, off his 2015 LP Communion (TriAngle), Stott’s is more like Léon “The Professional”–a soulful killer somehow beyond good and evil. Analogies aside, longtime Stott collaborator, vocalist Alison Skidmore also joins him on this track, and it’s that introduction of a female element that tempers “Selfish”‘s more testosterone extremes.
Andy Stott will play select US live shows beginning at the end of this month. Here is a list of his upcoming dates…
