As Prostitutes, James Donadio makes wickedly minimal techno. The Cleveland-based musician is currently readying his Straightened Out EP for release on May 9th, and it will be the artist’s first on the Atlanta label CGI Records. Today we take a listen to the effort’s hard driving second cut, “Ridicule The Rule“. Donadio first came to our attention with 2013’s Crushed Interior (Digitalis Recordings) LP, as well as 2014’s Petit Cochon (Spectrum Spools), and on both long-players, he explored a hauntingly bleak brand of techno distinguished by machine-driven rhythms and robotic ambience. On Straightened Out, Donadio still seems to be making music for your inner android, but we are told that the new effort finds him playing more the role of the musician than producer. Tracks like “Ridicule the Rule” are the result of Donadio plugging in his instruments and recording the results, and it lends them a raw and immediate vibe. Blisteringly focused, the musician’s minimal palette is augmented by a the sound of a siren here, and it might have you running for the doors, but the groove of the rhythm is so tight you won’t be able to leave the dance floor!
