Listen: Derivatives “Forwards, Futures, and Options”

Seattle’s Medical Records recently launched a new techno sub-label called Transfusions, issuing 12″ singles/EP’s in old-school “uniform disco sleeves” while focusing on more stripped down and minimal examples of the genre. The series kicked off this past March with Alexander Robotnick and Ludus Pinsky, and now we take a listen to a preview of the upcoming offering from Vancouver, BC native Derivatives.

The work of musician Josh Rose–know for his intense, live hardware sets–this 7-minute preview from Forwards, Futures, and Options finds him honing his penchant for dark, hard-driving techno into evocative and kinetically charged dance music. While often starkly monochromatic in tone, Rose infuses techno’s four-to-the-floor rhythm with a heartbeat pulse and it lends a human dimension to the sonic proceedings here.

Sub-sonic throbs register as spine tingling depth charges before the rhythm undergoes a barely perceptible metabolic shift. By the track’s midpoint, everything drops thru a K-hole to the other side where luminous rays of synth wash over the listener with their salubrious vibes! Forwards, Futures, and Options will feature four tracks recorded live in Vancouver in 2015, and the 12″ is due out June 3rd on 160-gram black vinyl via Transfusions (Medical).
