Seattle electronic duo NAVVI is getting set to release their LP debut Omni via Hush Hush Records on May 27th. Today, we take a listen to the pair’s newest offering from the upcoming effort–the sultry, slow-burner “What Reason Do We Need?” Producer Brad Boettger and vocalist Kristin Henry make ultra sophisticated synth and drum machine driven pop, and on this new track they turn down the tempo for an intimate, after hours thriller.
Henry’s crepuscular vocal melodies lean in an R&B direction on the cut, and Boettger evocatively arranges them from their opening ambience into rousing verses that seem to yearn for some unreachable resolution. Synth pads fill the track with an open, night air and they couple with somatically tuned bass tones, while the producer’s skittering rhythm lines–filled with deep bass kicks, dusky claps, and rolling snares–add a propulsive tension throughout.
If you live in Seattle, you can catch NAVVI live at Barboza for their Omni Release show on Wednesday, June 8th.
