U.S. Girls recently released this video for “New Age Thriller“, a track off Meg Remy‘s excellent 2015 LP Half Free (4AD). Directed, shot, and edited by Ross Turnbull, and featuring “the shadow” of Remy herself–as well as a host of other Turnbulls–this track’s cryptic reprisals are met by tense, often abstracted imagery. Remy warns, “When the nighttime falls/you’re left to your disgrace”, before chiding, “It seems you could care less/that you don’t own yourself”.
Lyrically, a complex set of ideas seem to play out on multiple levels, as this track sketches the ragged, often contested boundaries of (female?) self-identity. Met visually by a triangle of protagonists, whose identities and relationships are difficult to discern but obviously loaded, Turnbull’s video is an excellent compliment to this heady and defiant track! If you live in Seattle, you can catch U.S. Girls live at The Vera Project on Friday, May 20th. Follow this link for a complete tour list.
