Mark Williams is a US-based electronic producer who makes music under the moniker Bary Center. Seems it’s been a busy year for Williams, as he already has two albums out–Stop Believing on Denmark’s Speaker Footage label, as well as his most recent offering, No Stars on Minneapolis’ MJMJ Records. Blurring the boundaries between techno, ambient, dub, psych and noise, Williams crafts textured, groove-oriented sounds while releasing music on labels like Crash Symbols, Skrot Up, Gnar Tapes, and Headway over recent years.
Today, we catch up with his videos for “Reverse Fortunes” and “Ledge“–off No Stars and Stop Believing, respectively. In introducing us to his music, Mark was quick to point out the work done on these two videos by the amazing artist Jason Scott Furr. Based out of Asheville, NC, Furr’s abstract, graphically oriented style is the perfect pairing here. For instance, “Reverse Fortunes” follows a minimalist path towards techno bliss layering drum sounds, modulated noise, and deep bass throb into a pulsing sonic mass. Furr follows suit, and using a stark, monochromatic palette and repeating geometric patterns, he creates the kind of hypnotic imagery you simply can’t take your eyes off of.
Sonically, “Ledge” is a bit-crushed shredder, and for the visuals, Furr follows a slightly different tact to similar ends. Opting for a chromatic palette here, the artist collects together a kinetic blast of text and imagery–a veritable garbage bag of web trash–which he composites over candy-coated patterning. Meticulously beat triggered, this dizzying array of images tug the eye in many different ways, until, from sheer optical overload, the mind warily submits control to the blistering barrage.
