Listen: Jlin “Downtown”

Jerrilynn Patton, aka Jlin, is an electronic producer from Gary, Indiana, and her 2015 LP Dark Energy (Planet Mu) was one of our favorite albums of last year. The musician returns this week with a new track for Adult Swim‘s Singles Program called “Downtown“, and its a further demonstration of her ability to transcend the genres of footwork and juke while putting her own unique signature on the forms.

Jlin has been making music since 2008, but she decided early on that rather than sampling other tracks to make cuts, she would create her own sounds. That decision has definitely paid off, and while her music pays homage to the forms that brought her up, she brings a fresh perspective to the music. Densely rhythmic, “Downtown”‘s kinetic beat patterns are slowed and sped up at will, as Jlin tricks out her drums with intricate flourishes while adding a juke-like vocal sample just to make sure no one’s getting their nose too high in the air! Oh yeah, this song is available for FREE download over at Adult Swim, so make sure to add it to your collection.
