Watch: Arca “Sin Rumbo”

The Venezuelan producer Arca released a free 14-track mixtape entitled Entrańas, yesterday. In addition, he has this new video for the collection’s final track, “Sin Rumbo.” Directed by his longtime visual collaborator Jesse Kanda–who also designed the mixtape’s haunting cover–the video features Alejandro Ghersi himself.

The producer’s face, bruised and sweaty, is seen in a close-up through one long take as he sings the lovelorn lyrics to this track–whose title loosely translates as “Aimless”. Kanda, whose striking imagery often involves alien, but still biomorphic looking creatures, uses his intimate perspective here to create a constantly shifting power dynamic. At times, the director’s queasy close-ups create empathy in the viewer, as we wonder what could have caused the red and yellow bruising around Ghersi’s eye and cheek; while at other times, Kanda seems to hold him under a microscope, forcing the viewer to inspect the pink contusion and yellowing skin marring the musician’s face.

Entrańas features collaborations with Mica Levi, Total Freedom, and Massacooraman, and you can download the 25-minute mixtape, here.
