Noise rap trio Clipping. will release their Splendor & Misery LP on September 9th via Sub Pop. Billed as an “Afrofuturist, dystopian concept album that follows the sole survivor of a slave uprising on an interstellar cargo ship, and the onboard computer that falls in love with him”, it promises to be another intriguing chapter in the band’s growing discography.
Today we watch Clipping.’s new video for the track “Baby Don’t Sleep“, directed by the multi-disciplinary artist Cristopher Cichocki. Using desaturated and glitched footage of rapper Daveed Diggs, often rapping from behind a composited chain-link fence, as well as stop motion animation of a soundboard piling up with cables, Cichocki’s video features “visual experiments with interference static, oscilloscopic wavelengths, and flicker-frame animation”. The perfect hypnotic accompaniment to this track’s gritty noise, and Diggs’ mesmerizing, surreal word flow.
