Watch Douglas Dare’s “New York” Video:
Douglas Dare has a brilliant new animated video for his track “New York“, off the musician’s upcoming LP Aforger, due out October 14th via Erased Tapes. Directed and animated by London’s Dan Jacobs, the artist has this to say about his new visual work:
“The idea of alternate/parallel realities is something I have always enjoyed exploring in my work, and there was a big cross over with the themes Douglas was exploring on his new record and particularly the track “New York”. Working in 3D enabled us to stick very close to the original ideas behind the track – the idea of a fragmented/distorted or romanticized memory of a place, and being unable to distinguish between what was real and what is imaginary…”
Douglas Dare’s intimate style bares all on Aforger and “New York” is no exception. Representing the apex of a relationship with his lover, Dare explains:
“I think New York can be thought of as this fabricated, magical place. I was there with my boyfriend after touring the U.S., but when I came back to London I discovered all these lies and began questioning everything. I even questioned whether New York actually happened or not. New York is a song that’s literally describing that very real feeling of not knowing who or what to believe anymore – scary and magical at the same time”.
Dan Jacobs echoes this with exquisitely animated visuals. The director’s protagonist is a tattered figure who stands in striking contrast to the digitally exacting city which surrounds him. Like one who has just discovered that the life he’s living is a lie, and tortured by that fact, this figure is forced to wander the cities maze-like corridors in a stupor. Hauntingly alone, this empty metropolis becomes a powerful metaphor for Dare’s painful realization that his lovers deceived him and locked in its’ empty urban confines he’s forced to wrestle with the seemingly endless solipsistic sorrow that follows.
