Listen to Equipment’s ‘Chump’ EP:
Equipment is Toledo-based new-comer Nick Stoup and today we listen to his brand new EP Chump (Counter Intuitive Records). Featuring 5-songs of infectious power-pop, Stoup has this to say about his debut record: “…I really tried to capture and articulate the situations I was living in at the time of writing: getting stuck in relationships I shouldn’t have been in, losing friends to college, and making rash choices after drinking alone…”
Sure, growin’ up ain’t easy, but Stoup also isn’t afraid to wear these trials and tribulations on his sleeve, with the young musician showing a real knack for turning this confusion and heartbreak into some compelling and catchy songs. “Commuter” is the EP’s standout and it explores that feeling of being left behind with Stoup singing, “Oh, it’s torture waiting ages for each day”. However, the waiting isn’t the hardest part when the singer realizes his friends have all moved on to become “happier” than he’s ever seen them. It’s that lonely moment in life when youth gives way to adulthood and choosing one’s own path thru the maze of growing up takes on critical importance. It would seem Stoup has chosen music as his vehicle thru this storm and on “Commuter” that choice pays off as he threads jangling guitar with passages of crunchy and distorted bliss.
