Watch Austra’s “Future Politics” Video:
The future is now in Austra‘s new video for “Future Politics“! Directed by Allie Avital, and featuring Austra’s Katie Stelmanis, as well as a host of “urban dwellers” in seemingly dire circumstances, the video seeks an alternative to our apocalyptically imagined futures. Discussing the new visuals, Avital and Stelmanis have this to say about the video:
“Future Politics is the breaking down of paradigms. In this video, we wanted to explore what a world might look like if our values were transformed: instead of glorifying labor, maybe we could learn to glorify the act of doing absolutely nothing.”
While it is a necessary creative task to imagine a future in which our values are transformed, I suspect the politics of the now will require the opposite of “doing absolutely nothing”. We can dream of a time when labor as we know it is supplanted by a more artful lifestyle, but, with nationalism on the rise in the US and Europe, our political futures require engagement, diligence, and mobilized action. Stylized indolence just won’t get the job done! Look for the Future Politics LP to come out on January 20th via Domino.
