The Brooklyn-based duo Uniform will release their sophomore LP Wake in Fright on January 20th via Sacred Bones. Today we listen to the cut “The Killing of America“, the band’s second single from the upcoming record. Uniform’s vocalist Michael Berdan (York Factory Complaint) has this to say about the album:
“This record is primarily about psychic transition. The distress that these songs attempt to illustrate comes from a place of stagnation and monotony. This is what happens when old ways of thinking become exhausted and old ways of coping prove ineffective. Something must change or it will break.”
On “The Killing of America” things are broken indeed. Guitarist Ben Greenberg (The Men, Zs) unleashes a sonic gut-punch as he batters a guitar line into distorted shapes before exploding into a mushroom cloud of noise by the track’s end. Meanwhile, rhythmic elements pummel with the sound of exploding bombs and gunshots, accelerating into a maelstrom of blast beats as the cut devolves. Berdan’s staccato verbal phrasings bark throughout “The Killing of America”, and he stridently narrates this cut’s terror with teeth-grinding tension.
