Watch Father John Misty’s Pure Comedy Film:
Father John Misty records his next masterpiece while Los Angeles burns in his new Pure Comedy film. Director Grant James (“Funtimes in Babylon,” “I Love You, Honeybear”) rejoins FJM’s Josh Tillman for this twenty-five minute behind the scenes peak into the making of Tillman’s upcoming 2xLP of the same name. A surreal dream logic prevails here as we watch Tillman and a host of other musicians and engineers go about recording FJM’s upcoming record. Jump cuts and animated sequences continually interrupt the film’s expected flow as the narrative moves between scenes of Tillman in studio, at home, as well as driving thru the streets of LA as the city seems to burn all around him.
Father John Misty wrote the majority of Pure Comedy in 2015, the same year he released his breakout LP, I Love You, Honeybear. The album was recorded at United Studios in March of last year and Sub Pop reports that all the basic tracking and vocals were recorded to tape at that time in no more than two takes. The album also contains string, horn and choral arrangements by experimental composer/musician Gavin Bryars, with additional contributions from Nico Muhly and Thomas Bartlett. Look for Pure Comedy to also feature album art from Ed Steed (The New Yorker). The massive illustration will grace the cover, back, and gatefold–with cover variations for the LP and CD randomly distributed for your collecting pleasure. Pure Comedy is due out April 7th via Sub Pop/Bella Union.
