Listen to Julia Holter’s Track “Horns Surrounding Me”:

Today we listen to Julia Holter‘s track “Horns Surrounding Me“, which first appeared on the musicians 2013 LP Loud City Song (Domino). In addition, you can now find this live version of the song on Holter’s upcoming album, In The Same Room, due out March 31st. The record will be part of Domino’s Documents series, which, according to the label, seeks to “capture the live arrangements of our artists and their bands in high fidelity.” Inspired by “classic BBC sessions”, Holter’s record was recorded at London’s RAK Studios. Captured in two days, the career spanning album finds the musician teamed up with bandmates Corey Fogel on drums, Dina Maccabee on viola/vocals, and Devin Hoff on stand-up bass.

Reinterpreted for this live session, the new version of “Horns Surrounding Me” foregoes the title instrument’s strong presence. Instead, the composition focuses on simmering strings and piano, brooding bass, and Holter’s beguiling voice. While the Loud City Song iteration has a more theatrical quality, this live version has a real open air vibe to it. Strings and piano swirl in this idyllic environment, providing a shade-like ambiance, while Julia Holter’s gorgeous voice cuts thru the shadows like peels of golden light.
