Today we listen to Marla Singer‘s new Format EP. The French techno producer just posted the two song collection to his Soundcloud page today and he’s also made it available as a FREE download. Singer deals in a dark, malevolent strain of minimal techno here with plenty of industrial textures and tones adding to the sense of urban malaise. “Format01” rips out of the gate like a fast spreading chemical fire as gnarly bass tones belch forth a pitch black smoke. Combined with a foreboding kick drum pattern, Singer’s cyborg rhythm gives this cut a snaky feel that slithers with chthonic energy. Metallic drones can be heard howling throughout, as Singer follows “Format01” around a maze; but in the end, there’s No Exit.
A sense of dread also animates “Format02“. Initially, though, the air is clearer here, even if no less tense. Eventually, a rolling bassline enters and while not the burning sulfur fire of “Format01”, its’ sfumato tones put forth heavy drapes of smoke which the bass-line then plays hide-and-seek from behind. By the time the track wades out into deeper waters some alien serum drips in slow drops from a celestial syringe. Eventually, it brings the blood to a near stop, but before this track taps out it returns for one more dose.
