Watch Wonky Tonk’s “Four Letter Word” Video:

Let’s watch Wonky Tonk‘s new video for “Four Letter Word“. The work of Kentucky-based indie songstress Jasmine Poole, the track is on her upcoming limited edition 7″, Love Detox, due out February 17th. “Four Letter Word” will appear on the A-side of that release and this past week the song received an intriguing video treatment that you can check out above. The video was directed by Poole and David Morrison (drummer of The Ass Ponies), who also shot and edited the footage. Filmed at a cabin in Hocking Hills, OH, the visuals are a perfect accompaniment to Wonky Tonk’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Discussing the video for “Four Letter Word”, Poole explains:

“This song can not exist without the video and the video is meaningless without the song. We attempted to make something quite artfully conscious; the song appears, on surface, a general country tune and I feared that the words would be lost on most listeners. The honesty behind them needed a raw visual to force the listener to actively…listen in order to understand the relationship between the beauty and magic as well as the sacrifice and reality of what we all continually search for: love.”

Lyrically, “Four Letter Word” contrasts the singer’s younger, naive views of love with a more adult assessment of its’ realities. Visually, this is accomplished in several ways. The video opens with a shot of a broken picture frame on the ground before panning to a bouquet of dead flowers on the window sill next to a greeting card that reads, “Love Grows Here”. Throughout the video, these kitschy knick-knacks depicting this more innocent, Hallmark vision of love and youth is played against the singer’s growing realization of its’ thornier details. And, while the irony of an embroidered statement like “Wherever you are, That’s where I’ll be…”, in a picture frame that reads “Scam”, is pretty straightforward, the singer’s progressive revelation that she stands before us wearing nothing at all presents a more complex visual metaphor about the “sacrifice” that love requires. “Shit, fuck, and damn/Love IS a four letter word”!
