John Frum‘s outstanding new “Memory Palace” video was created by Christopher Konopka. The Boston-based artist uses an analog video synthesizer to create complexly textured, multi-layered imagery and his optically searing visuals are the perfect accompaniment to John Frum’s volcanic death metal.
Watching the video, you can see that Konopka has an intuitive understanding of the band, and likewise, the “Memory Palace” line: “An endless expanse of the protocosmic horizon lay in full upon the edges of what could no longer be considered reality”, seems like a perfect descriptor for this artist’s hypnagogic vision. Layering video signals while applying various keying and compositing effects, Konopka’s imagery seems to hang in a realm somewhere between dream and waking.
John Frum features Matt Hollenberg (John Zorn, Cleric) on guitar, Eli Litwin (Bvrden/Intensus/Deveykus) on drums, Derek Rydquist (The Faceless) on vocals, and Liam Wilson (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Starkweather) on bass. The group will release their debut LP A Stirring in the Noos on May 12th via Relapse Records. The band had this to say about “Memory Palace” via Facebook:
“Memory Palace is a journey into the ever changing and expanding void we find ourselves hurtling through, and a reflection on the fleeting knowledge one stands to gain within. It also speaks to the pitfalls of our god complex and the futility of enlightenment on any scale.”
