Clipping.‘s excellent 2016 LP Splendor & Misery (Sub Pop/Deathbomb Arc) was one of our favorites of 2016. This week it was announced that the group’s “Afrofuturist, dystopian concept album” has been shortlisted for the “Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form)” category of the Hugo Awards–which go to specific works of science fiction or fantasy from the proceeding year. Look for the awards to be presented on August 11th at Worldcom 75 in Helsinki, Finland.

Today, we watch Clipping.’s “True Believer” video from the album. Released earlier this week, it was directed by one of the group’s longtime visual collaborators, Carlos Lopez-Estrada–who is also responsible for the band’s videos like “Air ‘Em Out”, “Work Work”, and “Inside Out”. The track, “True Believer”, features artist/vocalist Paul Outlaw, and he stars here as an astronaut slowly ascending into outer space. Emerging from a cellar outside a corner bodega, Paul Outlaw is fully outfitted in space suit and helmet, and we watch as he slowly rises from beneath street level into the sky high above the city.
