Andrya Ambro, formerly of the post-punk duo Talk Normal, returns with a new project called Gold Dime, and the trio will release their debut LP Nerves on June 2nd via Fire Talk Records. The drummer/vocalist is joined by the musicians Jessica Ackerley and Ian Douglas-Moore, and the group has reportedly been playing out since 2014. Our first listen in on the band’s upcoming record is the album’s epic opener “Easy,” which premiered this week via Impose.
Clocking in at a little over eight minutes, from a sonic perspective, “easy” it ain’t. But then again, we’d expect nothing less from a group that finds Ambro behind the drums and handling vocal duties as well. An off-kilter heartbeat opens the track as peels of guitar spin out in icy slow motion. Gut rumbling low-end adds to the building tension, before Ambro’s spellbinding and mantric vocal delivery takes center stage here. Somehow, it’s like the word “easy” keeps getting stuck in her throat as she struggles to stammer forth the utterance, and, throughout the cut, there’s a sense that she’s channeling the kind of powerful force that could take over her vocal abilities at any moment. If it’s easy listening you want, you’ve come knocking on the wrong door.
Look for Gold Dime to play a show with White Hills this month at the Union Pool in Brooklyn, as well as a Record Release Show next month at Alphaville. You can find a list of the band’s upcoming dates after the Soundcloud embed.
