Stuart Howard‘s Lapalux project took a left turn on his new LP Ruinism which came out this past June via Brainfeeder. Instead of leading down a dark alley to a dead end, it seems to have opened up a lot of new space for the young producer on his third full-length. Gone are the late night grooves and chic R&B leanings found on his previous two LPs, and in their place, Howard has opened the door to cosmic dimensions with a more abstract take on his compositions.

Lapalux has an extraordinary new video for his track “Data Demon,” directed by Marielle Tepper. Possibly a poetic take on our celestial origins, much of the imagery here seems to center on the act of being born or giving birth. Filmed between a bright, desert-like locale and dark underwater realms, we watch as strange, biomorphic forms swim in embryonic fluid or writhe and twist on the hot sand of some planetary place. Echoing the cosmic dimensions of “Data Demon,” Tepper’s imagery is both eerily alien and suggestively familiar all at the same time.
