The all-female synth-pop band LJ Laboratory joins W Hotel’s WHAT SHE SAID panel and performance series this week with a stop at the hotel’s location in Seattle on Thursday, September 28th. The FREE event will take place in the hotel’s Living Room and will include the four-piece in a panel discussion with Abbie Gobeli and Amy Dunn of AEG, as well as Liz Pjesky of LP Touring. Discussing issues around female empowerment in the industry in general, as well as Electronic Music in particular, LJ Laboratory will also perform tracks from their upcoming debut LP, Analogue Interference.
LJ Laboratory began several years back as a solo project for LA-based singer Alexis de la Rocha. Originally called LEX, her 2015, 5-song EP out under that name was produced by Peter Franco (Daft Punk, Tycho). The musician wrote all the material for that first effort and recorded it using vintage analog synthesizers. Late in the recording of the EP, she hooked up with fellow musicians Alicia Villarreal (synths, bass), Jessica Ragsdale (drums), and Leah Chisolm (synths), with Chisolm and Villarreal playing on the EP track, “Mystery Boy.” The band has continued to hone their sci-fi fantasy take on synth-pop since that release, and their upcoming effort promises to be a conceptual album with an AI heroine at the center. Analogue Interference was once again recorded using analog and modular synthesizers, and the cinematic LP is being mixed by multi-GRAMMY winner Daniel Lerner (Kanye West, Daft Punk, N.E.R.D.).
