Savage Grounds is a Swiss post-techno duo and the pair will release their limited edition 12″ Area Of Violence this September via Enfant Terrible. Composed of members Florin Büchel (Contra Communem Opinionem) and Lux Records co-founder Daniele Cosmo, the upcoming EP will be Savage Grounds first release on the Dutch label. The follow-up to the duo’s 2016 effort Atrocities (Lux Records), Area of Violence finds the two tightening their noose around a particularly potent strain of industrial-leaning techno.
“Negative Spaces” closes out the 4-track 12″, and while, in a certain sense, it might be less sonically aggressive than the record’s three previous tracks, its’ intent is no less insidious. Throughout Area of Violence, Büchel and Cosmo hone in on what they do best, and on this cut, that means distilling a particularly chilling melody from a simple two-note progression. Coupled with a staggering kick drum, stuttering high hat, and the slowly slurring arpeggiation of bass, “Negative Spaces” develops into a wickedly unsettling groove as the duo slowly turns up the heat here. With pressure mounting, the track’s bubbling low-end bakes into rippling lines of acid while industrial tones scour the horizon in sulfurous blasts.
