Lina Tullgren will release her debut LP Won on Friday, September 22nd via Captured Tracks. The highly anticipated album is the follow-up to the singer/songwriter’s Wishlist EP which came out last year on the label. The 23-year-old musician grew up playing the fiddle and learning classical technique, and that training really seems to inform her unique approach to the electric guitar–which you can hear on this track, “Face Off.”
Tullgren’s off-kilter minor chords and progressions come together in the strangest ways, here, and combined with the cloudy slow beat of a kick drum, this track hangs suspended in a spellbinding and melancholy air. The singer’s conversational approach to song, as she takes stock of her life with wry observations and plain-spoken insights, has the power to deliver cathartic emotional consequences.
The video for “Face Off” was directed by Tullgren’s bandmate, Ty Ueda, who says that the concept was, “based on meditations and sentiments on the topic of home.” Today, Tullgren added these insights about it via her Facebook page, explaining that the video was “…filmed all around new england: the doors of houses i grew up in, my friends’ old houses, the oceans i spent my childhood swimming in”, before asking, “do we ever find home? or are we just running simultaneously towards and away from it.”
Lina Tullgren will embark on a Fall tour later this month, kicking off with album release shows in both Boston and Brooklyn. Check out the dates after the video embed…
