When you can feel your “molecules dance you,” it’s a pretty groovy thing! Thollem returns this week with a far-out new track and video. Like last week’s single, “Nuclear Nap,” this newest offering was recorded this Fall at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, and it finds the keyboardist again joined by flutist Marco Orozco, with drummer Ravish Momin sitting in for the session. While “Nuclear Nap”‘s pastoral folk delivered an atomic warning and Transcendental message, “Molecules Dance You” has a spontaneous, late-night feel to it. Wigged out and funky, this new cut invites you to explore your inner chemistry with the psychoactive refrain, “Feel the molecules/Let the molecules dance you.”
The video is directed by Thollem’s visual collaborator, ACVilla, also responsible for the pair’s amazing film series documenting the 2016 election season, Who Are U.S.. She reports that “Molecules Dance You” was filmed in Detroit, after a spontaneous stop in the city found the two meeting up with friends at the cafe/performance space, Trinosophes. With an invitation to use the venue for the filming their new video, ACVilla explains:
“I searched the Moving Image Archive for clips of molecules and synced the clips to the music. We spread the word among friends and had a fun time dancing with the ones who showed up. The directions were basic: wear a white/light colored shirt and come ready to move around/dance. One of the participants suggested a few of them dance solo, which was a great idea! Our intention was to keep the production simple and fun, just like the song. Everyone walked away tired and energized at the same time… and we realized that we should all dance more.
