George Evelyn’s Nightmares on Wax will return next year with a new LP called Shape The Future due out January 26th via Warp Records. We last heard from the artist this past September with the release of his brilliant track and video “Back To Nature,” the opening cut off Evelyn’s upcoming release. Discussing the record, the musician/DJ had this to say:
“Making Shape The Future I’ve journeyed both inwardly and outwardly all over the world and both physically and emotionally. I feel like I had to mature making this record, as it posed a lot of challenges along the way – more than I anticipated. You’re a different person each day so I could never make the same album again- expressions change. I’ve brought in a lot of outside people including musicians and a lot of orchestration . It’s brought a lot of enrichment. Each album to me is discovery and a reflection, a mirror where I’m at in life over a period of time through writing an album and touring. It’s inspiring my reality or affecting my outlook on things and in turn, is expressed through the music and expressing a message through different sides of emotion and our relationship to our reality.”
“Citizen Kane” is the newest offering from Nightmares on Wax, and the track features vocals from Mozez, as well as Kanye West and Flume collaborator Allan Kingdom. Evelyn’s recent maturation seems to include a laser focus on deeper, more spiritual issues; and while “Back To Nature” featured the wise-voiced shaman Kuauhtli Vasquez of the Wixarika Tribe discussing our human heritage as Earth beings, “Citizen Kane” fuses Gospel-tinged Hip-hop and Dub leanings into a righteous and moving cut. The video is directed by James Burns and the cinematic visuals feature actor Langston Fishburne. Filmed in New Orleans, it is a moving portrayal of death, and it finds Burns depicting his protagonist’s passing with haunting beauty and deep mystery.
