I’m sure you’ll be hearing Screature‘s new single “Hit The Void” on our list of Best Tracks of 2017! The Sacremento-based band’s upcoming LP Old Hand New Wave was produced by Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Wand), and is due out January 19th via the group’s label imprint, Ethel Scull Records. Screature features vocalist Liz Mahoney, drummer Miranda Vera, organist Sarah Scherer, and guitarist Chris Orr. Formed by the four friends back in 2011, the band released a self-titled LP in 2013 via their label, as well as their Four Columns LP in 2015 on S-S Records/Ethel Skull.
“Hit The Void” is a colossal track of psychedelic goth-wave. By way of introduction, Screature offers this:
“Disappear with us for four minutes. It’s dark, dank, and heavy as hell. No more beyond.”
From its’ initial smoldering embers of moaning feedback and drone, the band ignites a powerful mix of combustible sonics. Miranda Vera’s drums sound huge and loaded with reverb they ring out into the domed sky, while Chris Orr punctuates the proceedings with heavy metal blasts of smoldering iron. With the stage set, vocalist Liz Mahoney emerges from the darkness, and Gorgon-like she helms this powerful cut with a bellowing voice full of dread and terror. “I hold your gaze/Till you bow down” she howls, as her riveting voice turns you to stone. Complete with fiery footage of a vintage rocket launch, this video is a perfect pairing to “Hit The Void”‘s bombastic sound.
