With her star on the rise, Korean-born DJ/producer Peggy Gou is readying a new 3-track EP called Once, due out March 2nd via Ninja Tune. The artist spent her formative years growing up in London, where she started DJing and producing while a student at the London College of Fashion. While living in the UK in 2016, Gou released her Art of War I and II EPs via REKIDS, as well as the Day Without Yesterday/Six O Six 12″ on Phonica White, and the Seek for Maktoop EP on Ninja Tune’s techno imprint, Technicolour. Now living in Berlin, while traveling internationally to DJ, Gou again returns to her role as producer on Once. She explains:
“I really wanted to represent different styles and moods on this EP, from ‘open air’ warm-up vibes to ‘proper party’. I tried to draw on all my influences of the last few years, from electro, African music, early 90s house music and also techno, especially Maurice Fulton and DMX Krew.”
The EP also finds Peggy Gou breaking new ground by introducing her own Korean and English vocals into the mix. While the musician has included her voice on tracks before, this is the first time she’s actually sung. On “Han Jan,” the producer crafts futuristic electro-funk with a vintage vibe that harkens back to Detroit’s early techno sound. Sleek basslines combine with a kinetic rhythmic shuffle here, and Gou’s coolly delivered Korean rap is followed by the English refrain: “You’ve got to do it right/Enjoy your night.” Sounds like stellar advice from someone who might know a thing or two on the subject…
