Last I’d heard, Dr. Octagon had returned to somewhere in the future of the Virgo Supercluster to hang up his speculum and run a bikini waxing shack on the beach. Turns out, the Earth is in desperate need of his hip-hop skills, and so he’s gotten the band back together to deliver Moosebumps: an exploration into modern day horripilation on April 6th via Bulk Recordings/Caroline. Featuring all three original members: Kool Keith, Dan The Automator, and DJ QBert, the trio’s upcoming album will be the true sequel to their home-baked masterpiece, 1996’s Dr. Octagonecologyst.
Recorded at Automator’s studio over marathon 24-hour sessions, on a track like “Octagon Octagon” we find the crew hasn’t missed a beat. Automator’s production is in full effect crafting teaming worlds of funhouse sound around choral synth lines and cavernous blasts of bass, while QBert’s scratching adds razor-sharp pyrotechnics. Kool Keith’s gift for gab has never slacked over the years, and something about the Octagon persona always has him at his surreal best peddling everything here from his own brand of gasoline to: “Octagon surgery/For those that need an Octagon face.” I’ll take two!
The lyric video for “Octagon Octagon” was directed by Juan Pinto. Look for Dr. Octagon’s Moosebumps: an exploration into modern day horripilation to come out digitally, as well as on CD and 2xLP. All physical copies of the album will include an exclusive track called, “Aviator Hype.” In addition, you can pick up a limited edition pressing of a 1000 copies on blood splattered vinyl with alternate gatefold album art.
