Soft Kill turn near-tragedy into an overwhelming creative triumph on their upcoming LP Savior, due out May 11th via Profound Lore Records. While returning from touring their critically lauded 2015 effort Choke, frontman Tobias Grave’s pregnant wife began to bleed out while still eight months pregnant. Far from any hospital, the band drove through the night in a desperate attempt to reach the UC Davis Trauma Center in Sacramento where emergency surgery was performed to save both mother and child.
Though the surgery was a success, Grave’s new son Dominick suffered a lung collapse on his second day of life. The young boy was saved with the help of blood transfusions and feeding/breathing tubes as the musician held vigil over the succeeding days and months. To pass the time, Grave purchased a guitar and borrowed a bass from a friend so that he could begin writing the music that would become Soft Kill’s fifth LP, Savior. Ultimately recorded and mixed at Kingsize Sudios in Los Angeles, the album was produced by Benjamin Greenberg (Uniform, The Men, Algiers).
“Missing” is our newest listen in on the upcoming record and with soaring guitar lines and brooding bass, the song seems to hang somewhere between life and death. Doom-laden, and yet filled with the hope and promise of life, Grave intones the song’s story with a gothic, but brave melancholy, in the face of this near tragedy. Discussing the song and upcoming album with Decibel today, the musician explains that “Missing” is his “favorite Soft Kill song ever.”
The band is currently wrapping up an extensive tour of the US, and you can find their remaining tour dates after the video embed below…
