On a Saturday in Seattle when the news of the night might have been somewhere else (Sasquatch Fest, Folklife), NYC’s Las Rosas turned in the kind of set that reminds you just how important it is to dig below the surface when searching for entertainment options. Sure, you could be spoon fed an evening’s fun at some over-hyped festival or have it served up lukewarm on your desktop, but the real joys of going out to hear music often happen when a band that might not have been on your radar (Seattle’s Secret Superpower) blows you away with an impressive opening set, or a group at the height of their abilities like Las Rosas thrills with an intimate collection of songs seemingly played for just you and your closest friends.
Las Rosas is currently touring the US in support of their new album Shadow By Your Side out now on Greenway Records. The Brooklyn-based outfit features core members guitarist/vocalist Jose Boyer (Daytona/Harlem), bassist Jose Aybar (Wild Yaks), and drummer Christopher Lauderdale (Daytona). Opening the night with their ultra-catchy B-side track “Lost Cat,” as well as a generous helping of cuts from the new album including the Shadow By Your Side standout “Tax Man,” the band plays darkly tinged but upbeat garage rock. Boyer’s guitar melds classic rock influences with the surfy side of psych and his introspective lyrics and laconic drawl are buoyed by Lauderdale’s exhilarating drumming and Aybar’s stylish bass work. Live Eye Tv photographer Mike Walker caught up with the band this past Saturday night at Chop Suey in Seattle, and you can check out photos from the show below.
