Hamburg-based DJ and producer Helena Hauff is readying her Qualm LP for release on August 3rd via Ninja Tune. The title has multiple shades of meaning with the word translating from German as smoke, while in English it refers to a sense of unease or worry. The 12-track LP finds the artist working in her minimal, hardware-driven style–“trying to create something powerful without using too many instruments and layers.”
This week the album’s title track and it’s follow-up “No Qualms” were made available for streaming. While both tracks share a plangent melody, the original is an instrumental of swirling ambiance with its partner opting for an electro-driven rhythm section. Like two sides of the same coin, “Qualm”‘s introspective and hazy moodiness is balanced by “No Qualm”‘s kinetic extroversion.
