Today brings more from Johnny Jewel‘s 2xLP Themes For Television out now on Italians Do It Better/Cherry Pie Records. As we reported back in May, when the multi-instrumentalist/producer surprise released the effort, the album began when he started work on tracks for David Lynch and Mark Frost‘s Twin Peaks: The Return. Jewel’s initial sonic sketches for the series were launched without having any images or scenes from the show, and they yielded six hours of recorded material based on his imagined take on just what The Return might be. Themes For Television culls together nearly an hour’s worth of mostly instrumental material from those early efforts, and the 21-track 2xLP was sequenced and edited last year in Tokyo.
Back in May we watched the video for “Red Door” off the album. This week brings new visual work for the track “Spiral Staircase.” Also directed by Radka Leitmeritz and shot by Rene Hallen, the film noir once again features the chimeric presence of model Eva Klimkova. Filmed once more at the Grand Hotel Evropa in Prague, “Spiral Staircase” feels like a Lynchian inspired fever dream. Presented in black and white, the video’s mysterious and time blurring circumstances are probably best summed up by Klimkova’s enigmatic and implacable gaze.
